President Donald Trump has named a new choice to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration after rescinding his original pick last December.

“I am pleased to announce that Terry Cole will be the next Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Cole worked at the DEA for 21 years, according to Trump’s social media post, with tours of Colombia, Afghanistan, and Mexico City. He is currently Virginia’s secretary of public safety and homeland security, leading a state-level agency with more than 19,000 employees.

If confirmed by the Senate, Cole would replace acting DEA Administrator Derek S. Maltz, who took over the job on Inauguration Day.

Cole’s nomination is also the latest step in an unusual nomination cycle. Trump initially named Florida Sheriff Chad Chronister to the post before abruptly pulling the nomination amid controversy over reports that Chronister shut down churches during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At first, Chronister said he withdrew the nomination himself, citing dedication to his constituents in Hillsborough County, but Trump didn’t let that go unchecked.

“He didn’t pull out. I pulled him out because I did not like what he said to my pastors and other supporters,” Trump said in early December.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) was one of the upset supporters, saying Chronister “should be disqualified” over his enforcement of COVID-19 protocols.

With that spat behind him, Trump is now looking to get Cole through the Senate and into his administration.

“Together, we will save lives, and MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN,” Trump wrote. “Congratulations Terry!”
