President Joe Biden castigated former President Donald Trump and his supporters Friday for claiming that the Thursday guilty verdict issued in Trump’s New York felony hush money trial was “rigged.”

A jury found Trump guilty on all 34 counts relating to the trial Thursday afternoon, and the former president is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11.

“It’s reckless, it’s dangerous, and it’s irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged just because they don’t like the verdict,” Biden said from the White House.

Biden’s comments came ahead of a speech on a new ceasefire proposal offered by Israel, in which he claimed that Thursday’s verdict “reaffirmed” the “American principle that no one is above the law.”

“Donald Trump was given every opportunity to defend himself. It was a state case, not a federal case, and it was heard by a jury of 12 citizens — 12 Americans, 12 people like you, like millions of Americans who served on juries,” the president stated. “This jury is chosen the same way every jury in America has chosen. It was a process that Donald Trump’s attorney was part of.

We should never allow anyone to tear it down,” he concluded. “It’s as simple as that. That’s America until we are. That’s who will always be God willing.”

Friday’s comments marked Biden’s first since the Trump verdict was issued, as the president spent Thursday memorializing the ninth anniversary of the death of his late son, Beau Biden.
