President Donald Trump appeared to open the door for a longer time frame for Congress to pass his “big, beautiful” reconciliation bill, but closed it shortly after saying the legislation must reach his desk by the self-imposed July 4th deadline.

“The House of Representatives must be ready to send it to my desk before July 4th — We can get it done,” Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social Friday afternoon.

But during a press conference earlier on Friday, Trump said the deadline was “not the end all,” and that Republicans could “go longer” in passing it when asked if his July 4 deadline would stick.

He continued, “But we’d like to get it done by that time if possible.”

The Senate is hoping to pass the megabill ahead of a rapidly approaching Independence Day deadline, but new wrinkles keep emerging as the massive legislative package works its way through Congress. The latest setback was the Senate parliamentarian striking down several provisions of the bill that were designed to cut spending.

Despite that, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) told reporters on Thursday, “We’ll have you out of here by the Fourth of July.”

But Trump seemed less concerned with the deadline during the Friday press conference, during which he celebrated a favorable ruling from the Supreme Court.

“Look, we have a lot of very committed people, and they feel very strongly about a subject, or subjects, that you’re not even thinking about, that are important to Republicans,” Trump said, referring to various intraparty logjams that are being worked through.

He then slammed Democrats, saying the only reason they could oppose the bill is that he supports it. Democratic opposition to the bill is centered on what the party describes as major cuts to Medicaid.

“[Opposition to the bill is] very dangerous,” Trump said, “because our country would go from being the most successful country in the world to — who knows what happens with a 68% tax increase that was given by the Democrats, because they like high taxes.”
