The judge in New York handling former President Donald Trump's civil fraud trial has contributed thousands of dollars over the years to Democrats, records show.

Judge Arthur Engoron, who ruled last week that Trump committed fraud over the years by exaggerating his assets and wealth, on Monday began presiding over a Manhattan nonjury trial over claims in a lawsuit from New York Attorney General Letitia James against the former president. But Republicans, including Trump, are alleging Engoron is a partisan actor: he's made over $5,000 in political donations since 1999, exclusively to Democratic candidates and committees, the Daily Wire reported.

SUPREME COURT’S NEW TERM TO ENCOMPASS GUNS, ABORTION, AND FRESH SOCIAL MEDIA CHALLENGES

"As President Donald Trump said yesterday, this is election interference," Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for Make America Great Again Inc., a Trump-allied super PAC, told the Washington Examiner. "President Trump will not be deterred by these attempts to stop his campaign. He will get last laugh when he is inaugurated on January 20, 2025."

The donations were made in New York and include a 2018 transfer to the Manhattan Democrats, as well as contributions to ex-New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, ex-Gov. David Paterson, and various state lawmakers. Most of the cash was directed to local committees, campaign finance disclosures show.

News of the contributions comes after Republicans on Monday took aim at Engoron, who was described in an Associated Press story as a former taxi driver, Vietnam War protester, and band member, for smiling as Trump's trial got underway Monday and posing for cameras. During a break in the trial, Trump said, "We’re going to be here for months with a judge that already made up his mind. It’s ridiculous. He’s a Democrat judge. He’s an operative. And it’s ridiculous."

The New York case proves to be particularly notable given it's a bench trial, which means there is no jury. As part of his ruling last week, Engoron revoked licenses held by Trump to operate properties in New York. James is aiming to hit the former president with a $250 million penalty, while Trump and his sons could possibly be prohibited from operating New York businesses.

"To the Left, there are only allies or enemies," Stephen Miller, an ex-adviser to the Trump White House and now-head of the conservative group America First Legal, said on Monday. "And the more they judge someone the latter, the more they will weaponize the ‘justice’ system against them. This is our brave new world."

Back in 2022, Engoron said that Trump was “just a bad guy.” Meanwhile, Trump has a commanding lead over the Republican primary presidential field and is widely expected to be the nominee in a rematch against President Joe Biden. He is facing a slew of legal cases, including federal charges on his handling of classified documents and efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.

Engoron's office did not return a request for comment.
