President-elect Donald Trump reportedly told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Canada should consider becoming the “51st state” if the country can’t handle his proposed tariffs.
Trump met with Trudeau last week after the latter became alarmed at the president-elect’s proposed 25% tariff on all Canadian-imported goods. Trudeau made a rare trip to Mar-a-Lago to speak with Trump and see if the two could come to an agreement on the future of trade between their two countries.
Trump threatened to slap tariffs on Mexico and Canada on Day One of his term because the countries neighboring the United States allegedly have allowed illegal immigrants from more than 70 different countries, drugs, and large amounts of people to flow in.
Trudeau told Trump that he could not impose the tariff because it would kill the Canadian economy. Trump replied curtly, “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?”
Then, the president-elect made his remark suggesting Canada should join the U.S., according to Fox News.
The comment made Trudeau and others at the table “laugh nervously,” though Trump continued speculating on it. Trump said Trudeau could be the governor of such a state, though prime minister “is a better title.”
Someone then reportedly chimed in and said the proposed “51st state” would be a very liberal one. That caused the table to erupt into laughter before Trump suggested it could become two states: a conservative state and a liberal one.
The exchange is unlikely to symbolize any true future moves for Canada to join the U.S. America has not added a state since Hawaii in 1959.

But the remarks caused a stir not unlike when a high-ranking New York legislator suggested a group of northeastern states should join Canada.
The Washington Examiner reached out to the Trump team to ask about the exchange but did not receive a response.
