NextImg:Trump ends LBJ-era Federal Executive Institute

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday that eliminated the Federal Executive Institute, a training program established by former President Lyndon B. Johnson.

After more than 50 years, the institute claims it has served over 30,000 senior federal leaders. It includes several leadership development programs that vary based on the federal employee pay scale.

“Our programs support federal leaders in understanding their role within the government’s constitutional framework,” the FEI website reads. “By encouraging introspection through small group work, participants build learning communities, where everyone is both a teacher and learner.”

“The Federal Executive Institute, which was created by the Administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson more than 50 years ago, is a Government program purportedly designed to provide leadership training to bureaucrats,” Trump’s executive order reads. “But bureaucratic leadership over the past half-century has led to Federal policies that enlarge and entrench the Washington, D.C., managerial class, a development that has not benefited the American family. The Federal Executive Institute should therefore be eliminated to refocus Government on serving taxpayers, competence, and dedication to our Constitution, rather than serving the Federal bureaucracy.”

Teachers of the FEI include adjunct faculty from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, Georgetown University, and the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. Georgetown government professor Brett Bruen was among its teachers and reacted to the news on X.

The FEI “helps make senior career officials better – more efficient leaders with top notch trainings,” Bruen wrote. “If the goal is getting more out of government, Trump should be expanding, not eliminating it.”

As its headquarters is in Charlottesville, Virginia, the FEI had a partnership with the University of Virginia. The Washington Examiner reached out to UVA for comment.

This institute fell under the U.S. Office Personnel Management, which the Washington Examiner also reached out to for comment.

The future of the FEI’s campus is yet to be determined.
