President Donald Trump stopped short of endorsing Vice President JD Vance to be the Republican presidential nominee in 2028.

The president’s comments came during an interview with Fox News’s Brett Baier ahead of the Super Bowl on Sunday evening. Fox held the portion of Trump’s interview discussing Vance until Monday afternoon.

“No, but he’s very capable,” Trump told Baier when asked if he views Vance as his “successor” in 2028.

“I think you have a lot of very capable people. So far I think he’s doing a fantastic job. It’s too early. We’re just starting,” the president continued.

Baier noted that “by the time you get to the midterms, [Vance is] going to be looking for an endorsement,” but Trump quickly changed topics.

“A lot of people have said that this has been the greatest opening, almost three weeks, in the history of the presidency,” he stated. “We’ve done so much, so fast. And we really had to because what they’ve done to our country is so sad.”

Vance, who is currently leading a U.S. delegation to an artificial intelligence conference in France, is nearly 40 years younger than Trump. Following the 2024 election, Republicans widely floated his name as the clear successor to the president, who is legally barred from running for another term in the White House in 2028.

The White House did not respond to questions on the topic.
