


President Donald Trump announced that the Republican Party would hold a convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump first hinted at the unusual move late last month. His Tuesday announcement gave no further details on the planned gathering but said it would be “very exciting!”

“The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024. Time and place to be determined. Stay tuned, it will be quite the Event, and very exciting!” the president said in a post on Truth Social.
In a post last month that first suggested the conference, he voiced his confidence that Republicans would win handily in the 2026 elections.
“We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS,” Trump said on Truth Social. “I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms.”

The convention will help Republicans gin up excitement as they shift to more defensive posturing. Democrats are set to hold their own convention before the midterm elections, looking to strip Republicans of their government trifecta.
The party not in the White House historically does better in the midterm elections.
