Former President Donald Trump's campaign indicated on Thursday that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has been the largest target for Trump during the 2024 race because of his disloyalty.

DeSantis War Room, an account that handles rapid response for his campaign, asked in a social media post why DeSantis is the only candidate routinely called out by Trump.

"Why doesn't Trump release videos about any other candidates?" it wrote.

In response, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said, "This is what happens to disloyal people. F***ed around and found out."

Trump has taken issue with DeSantis running before the campaign, when a White House run by the Florida governor was still the subject of speculation. According to Trump, DeSantis owes his election to governor of Florida to Trump's 2017 endorsement over then GOP front-runner Adam Putnam, Florida’s agriculture commissioner at the time.

DeSantis saw improvement in the polls following Trump's stamp of approval and ultimately beat Putnam in the primary before also winning in the gubernatorial race.

The former president has mentioned this in interviews and on social media, taking credit for DeSantis's win. He has previously called his choice to run disloyal and urged him to end his campaign.

Now, Trump's campaign is warning DeSantis and others that disloyalty to the former president will result in frequent attacks from Trump, which appear to have had an effect on DeSantis's poll numbers.

A super PAC supporting Trump's 2024 bid spent the spring running ads against DeSantis, spending more than $20 million. MAGA Inc. PAC's ads correlate with a decline in DeSantis's polling average, the PAC pointed out.

However, DeSantis's campaign has claimed the barrage of attacks from Trump and others only reinforces that he should be the GOP nominee in 2024.

"Republicans, Democrats, and the legacy media are united in their full-on assault of Ron DeSantis because he is the only candidate who can beat Joe Biden," campaign communications director Andrew Romeo said earlier this week.

"We know they will never call him the winner, and we fully expect the onslaught of attacks to reach a new level on the debate stage next week, but taking arrows on behalf of the American people is nothing new for DeSantis," he added. "It doesn't matter how much they come after him. Ron DeSantis will never back down."

In June, DeSantis addressed Trump's claims of disloyalty. In an interview with Fox News's Jesse Watters, DeSantis asked, Disloyal to who?"

"I mean, you know, politicians have to earn support," he said. "They're not entitled to support. I did a lot for him in 2016 and 2020. By the way, I was happy to do it. But at the end of the day, you know, I'm loyal to my family, to our Constitution, and to the good Lord."

He added, "I have a vision. I think I'm the guy that can beat Biden. But even more importantly, no more excuses on these issues. I'm going to get all of this stuff done. We'll have a plan on day one to get going and get cracking. We'll give you two great terms for eight years and really get the country on a fundamentally different path. I think I'm the guy that [can] do it. And so I have the responsibility to step up and serve."
