Former President Donald Trump referred to Michael Cohen, a former attorney of his, as a "proven liar" ahead of Cohen's court testimony in New York.

Trump's comments were made on Tuesday when he was asked what he thought of Cohen testifying in court. The former attorney for Trump will take the stand again on Wednesday in the civil fraud trial that could threaten the future of Trump's business in New York City.

"So he's a liar," Trump said. "He's trying to get a better deal for himself."

Ahead of his court appearance, Cohen wrote on X, the social media platform once known as Twitter, that he would "continue to speak truth to power" and would do so despite the former president's "continued smear and harassment campaign against me."

The fallout between Trump and Cohen started during investigations into hush-money payments made to two women before the 2016 election. Cohen paid a combined $280,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal on Trump's behalf to quiet affair allegations.

Earlier this month, Cohen described Trump's civil fraud trial as a "deathblow" to the former president and a "financial catastrophe." He went on to say that Trump's biggest fear is to lose "all of his money."

The civil fraud trail is one of many legal battles Trump is facing, as he has also been indicted multiple times this year for various reasons, including allegations related to keeping classified White House documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, as well as his involvement with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The legal setbacks come as Trump is seeking another presidential run in the 2024 election, setting up a potential rematch between him and President Joe Biden.
