NextImg:Trump blasted ‘chain migration’ policies that made it easier for Melania Trump’s mother to come to US - Washington Examiner

Former first lady Melania Trump’s mother used a policy repeatedly derided by former President Donald Trump in order to immigrate to the United States.

Federal immigration records obtained by the Washington Post found that Amalija Knavs, the late mother of Melania Trump, used “chain migration” policies in 2009 to move to the U.S. from Slovenia. The outlet obtained the records after filing for them soon after Knavs’s death in January, when privacy protections were diminished.

While many parts were still redacted, the records showed that Knavs was sponsored by Melania Trump for a green card. This was in accordance with federal law since 1965, which allows citizens to sponsor relatives in immigrating, expediting the visa process.

Donald Trump condemned the policies throughout his presidency and sponsored legislation to crack down on them.

“Congress must end chain migration so that we can have a system that is SECURITY BASED! We need to make AMERICA SAFE!” he said in a November 2017 tweet.

In a tweet the next month, he derided chain migration as “horrible.”
