Former President Donald Trump blamed the "stench" of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as the reason for Republican state Attorney General Daniel Cameron losing the Kentucky gubernatorial election.

Cameron lost by nearly five points to incumbent Gov. Andy Beshear in the heavily Republican state, after basing his campaign around his endorsement from Trump. Trump claimed that Cameron's relationship with McConnell was "too much to bear" and that McConnell and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) are "Kryptonite for Republican Candidates," in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday.

THREE TAKEAWAYS FROM A ROUGH 2023 ELECTION FOR THE GOP

"Daniel Cameron lost because he couldn’t alleviate the stench of Mitch McConnell. I told him early that’s a big burden to overcome," Trump said. "McConnell and Romney are Kryptonite for Republican Candidates. I moved him up 25 Points, but the McConnell relationship was 'too much to bear.' Tate Reeves, on the other hand, surged to a win for Governor in Mississippi after my involvement. Congratulations to Tate!"

McConnell last won reelection to the Senate in 2020 by nearly 20% over his well-funded Democratic challenger. The comments from Trump, which were his first on the Kentucky gubernatorial race since Cameron was projected to lose, came days after he had claimed that Cameron had shown he was "not really a McConnell guy."

"Wow, Daniel Cameron of Kentucky has made a huge surge, now that they see my strong Endorsement, and the fact that he’s not really 'a McConnell guy.' They only try to label him that because he comes from the Great State of Kentucky. Anyway, Go Daniel, great future for you and your State—You will bring it to new levels of success, and I will help you!" Trump said on Saturday.

Trump won Kentucky in 2020 over now-President Joe Biden by more than 25 points, but Beshear beat Cameron easily, even as Republicans vastly outperformed their Democratic rivals in all statewide races on 2023's election night.

The results in Kentucky were part of a triumphant night for Democrats and a rough night for the GOP in various states, a year out from the pivotal 2024 presidential election. Democrats picked up major victories in several races nationwide, including in Virginia and Ohio.
