President-elect Donald Trump announced that he has decided to appoint Richard Grenell, his longtime foreign policy adviser, to serve as his envoy for “special missions.”

Grenell served in several positions during Trump’s first administration and was under consideration for other roles for this term as well. During the president-elect’s first term, Grenell served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany, special envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations, and the acting director of national intelligence.

“Ric will work in some of the hottest spots around the World, including Venezuela and North Korea,” Trump said on Truth Social.

It’s unclear what other global flashpoints could fall within Grenell’s purview.

Trump had considered Grenell to be his secretary of state, though the president-elect ultimately selected Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) to serve as his top diplomat. Trump also considered Grenell for the position of his national security adviser but chose Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) instead.

Trump previously said on Truth Social that he viewed Grenell as a “fabulous person, A STAR. He will be someplace high up!” indicating he was likely to get a role within the Trump administration. Grenell has been a loyal ally of Trump, who has rewarded loyalists with positions.
