President-elect Donald Trump said he talked to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and they agreed to close their shared border, a claim Sheinbaum soon after appeared to reject.
Trump said the countries will be “effectively closing our southern border.”
“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border. We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!”
Sheinbaum released a statement shortly after, sharing a different summary of the conversation.
“In our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights,” she posted on X.
“Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are assisted before they reach the border. We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples,” she wrote.
Trump then added to his remarks.
“Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately,” he said. “THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!”
Trump’s actions earned him the praise of a few GOP congressmen. “President Trump isn’t even in office yet, and he’s already making America safe again,” Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) posted on X. “He is a true leader. Thank you, President Trump!”
Rep. Michael Cloud (R-TX) added in a post on X, “Great news. President Trump is already making change!”

Sheinbaum has had a contentious relationship with Trump up to the point of their conversation Wednesday.
She blamed the United States for the fentanyl crisis in response to reports that Trump will increase tariffs on the country. “Tragically, it is in our country that lives are lost to the violence resulting from meeting the drug demand in yours,” she said.
