A new poll from The Economist/YouGov shows that Biden and Trump are in a dead heat with 39% of the vote if the election were to be held now, and they were the only two choices for president. The question received 1,491 responses.
Of the 1,491 respondents, 1,311 are registered voters. Among registered voters, Biden holds a 3-point lead over Trump, 43% to 40%.
However, when asked who respondents believed had the better chance of winning, Trump holds a 3-point lead over Biden among total respondents, 39% to 36%, with Biden holding a 2-point lead over Trump among registered voters, 39% to 37%.
The poll recorded Biden as having a 19% "very favorable" rating among total respondents and 21% among registered voters.
His job approval rating has hovered around the 40% mark since 2022, according to a Reuters favorability tracker. The Economist/YouGov poll showed him with a 40% approval rating among total respondents and 42% among registered voters. His disapproval rating is 54% among total voters and registered voters.
Voters do not think highly of Biden's leadership abilities, with 42% of registered voters believing he is a "very weak" leader. Thirty-eight percent of registered voters believe Biden "doesn't care at all" about the "needs and problems of people like you."
On the other side, Trump has a 23% "very favorable" rating among total respondents and 24% among registered voters. When asked about Trump's leadership abilities, 35% of registered voters said he was a "weak leader." Forty-four percent of registered voters believe Trump "doesn't care at all" about the respondents of the poll.
Biden and Trump's ratings have been rocked due to several instances in their personal lives. Trump's 2024 bid has faced turmoil after his indictment out of Manhattan over hush-money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment of falsifying business records in the case and has adamantly denied wrongdoing.
The former president was also found liable for sexual battery and defamation in May in the case brought by former magazine reporter E. Jean Carroll. He has denied any wrongdoing.
On Biden's side, his administration is facing several investigations from Republicans into everything from the federal government's response to COVID-19 to the release of the Durham report on the special investigation into Russia and Trump, as well as the business dealings of the president's son, Hunter Biden.
