Most Democrats and Republicans think Thursday’s presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump is important for their candidate’s campaign, according to a new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

More than half of both Democrats and Republicans said they think the debate is extremely or very important to the success of their candidate’s campaign, and at least 80% of people in both parties said they think it is at least somewhat important, according to the poll.

Overall, voters said they think the stakes are higher for Biden. Seventy-four percent of adults said the debate is at least somewhat important for the president’s campaign, compared to 68% who said it is important for Trump’s campaign.

Most are also planning to follow the debate in some capacity. Fifty-seven percent said they are highly likely to watch or listen to at least some of the debate or follow-up commentary about it, though only 37% said they are highly likely to watch or listen to it live.

Republicans and Democrats are around 20 percentage points more likely to tune in to the debate coverage than independents — only 41% of whom said they plan on following the debate in some way.

The first debate between Trump and Biden in 2020 drew more than 70 million viewers.

Despite the number of viewers planning on paying attention to the debate, which is happening unusually early for a presidential election, most people said they have a very or somewhat unfavorable view of Biden and Trump, according to the poll.

Trump remains more popular within his party, but only 42% of Democrats said they are satisfied with another Biden nomination, compared to 59% of Republicans who are satisfied with Trump’s nomination.

The 90-minute debate will be hosted by CNN on Thursday at 9 p.m., with CNN’s Dana Bash and Jake Tapper moderating.

Trump and Biden will not be allowed to bring prewritten notes to the debate and have agreed to have their microphones muted when the other candidate is speaking.
