The Trump administration has proposed implementing a cap on the length of foreign student visas as part of an effort to ensure the timely departure of those who enter the country.

The Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday afternoon that it proposed a rule to limit the amount of time that certain visa holders, including students, can remain in the United States.

“For too long, past Administrations have allowed foreign students and other visa holders to remain in the U.S. virtually indefinitely, posing safety risks, costing untold amount of taxpayer dollars, and disadvantaging U.S. citizens,” a DHS spokesperson said in a statement.

“This new proposed rule would end that abuse once and for all by limiting the amount of time certain visa holders are allowed to remain in the U.S., easing the burden on the federal government to properly oversee foreign students and history,” the spokesperson said.

Foreign students may apply for an F visa to enter the country for college or university. The F visa has existed since 1978 and states that the recipient may remain in the U.S. for the “duration of status,” which is considered an indefinite amount of time.

According to the DHS release, foreign students have “taken advantage of U.S. generosity and have become ‘forever’ students.”

The rule, which was proposed in the Federal Register and must be approved later this fall, would give students four years to start and finish higher education.

Additionally, foreign media representatives would be initially capped at a 240-day, or eight-month, visa.

The changes to duration of visas would be two-fold, according to the DHS. It would crack down on existing visa fraud committed by students who have stayed in the U.S. for months to years past their graduation date.

The visa reforms would also allow the DHS to increasingly focus on vetting applicants rather than tracking down students who have overstayed their visas and are now illegally present in the country.

On Monday, President Donald Trump said he would support allowing 600,000 Chinese students to enter the U.S. as foreign students to study at colleges and universities.

Trump’s show of support was immediately criticized by Republicans, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a longtime Trump supporter.

Several months earlier, the Trump administration unleashed a campus crackdown targeting foreign students who were supportive of the terrorist group Hamas at campus events over the past year.
