Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has blamed "Russian disinformation" for the attendance of a Nazi veteran at Canada's Parliament.

Trudeau's statement on Monday marked the first time he spoke since the Canadian Parliament gave a standing ovation to the Nazi veteran. The prime minister described the situation as "extremely upsetting" and "particularly" upsetting for Canada's Jewish community.

"I think it's going to be really important that all of us push back against Russian propaganda, Russian disinformation and continue our steadfast and unequivocal support for Ukraine, as we did last week, with announcing further measures to stand with Ukraine in Russia's illegal war against it," Trudeau said.

Trudeau also stated that the situation is "deeply embarrassing to the Parliament of Canada and by extension to all Canadians."

House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota issued an apology on Sunday night over the veteran's attendance at the Parliament, saying that he had since received more information that made him "regret my decision."

Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Canadian-based Jewish human rights group, released details about Yaroslav Hunka, the veteran, on Sunday afternoon, stating he had served in the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the Schutzstaffel. The group described it as "shocking" that Canada's Parliament would applaud Hunka for his time of service and that he was invited to the Parliament at all.

The group asked for both an apology and an explanation of how Hunka "entered the hallowed halls of Canadian Parliament and received recognition from the Speaker of the House and a standing ovation."
