The Left has dominated American culture for decades now and likely will continue to for years to come. But its comfortable grip on our institutions has led its activists to push too hard, too fast — to the point where they are quickly losing support from their own allies.

A new Gallup survey this month found that the number of people who identify as “very liberal” or “liberal” on social issues has fallen from 34% to 29% in the past two years. Meanwhile, the number of people who say they are social conservatives increased to 38%.

The shift toward social conservatism was most pronounced among Republicans and independents. Seventy-four percent of Republicans now say they are “very conservative” or “conservative” when it comes to cultural debates — a 14-point increase from 2021. And among independents, 29% now say they identify as social conservatives compared to 24% two years ago.

The poll also identified one of the causes of this shift: radical gender ideology, especially insofar as it affects women’s sports and private spaces. Sixty-nine percent of respondents, including 48% of Democrats and 67% of independents, said transgender athletes should be required to play on the sports team that matches their biological sex — up from 62% in 2021. The number of people who disagreed and said transgender athletes should be allowed to play on the sports team that matches their “gender identity” dropped 7 points to 26%.

In other words, the vast majority of people, including those who generally support the LGBT agenda, recognize that the Left’s attempted rewrite of biological reality is a bridge too far. They see transgenderism not as an extension of equal rights but as an effort to upend the civil rights fought for and secured by women. And no matter how tolerant people might like to be, they simply cannot deny what is plainly evident: Men are men, women are women, and nothing can change that fact.

Whether the issue of gender ideology will be enough finally to dethrone the Left is another question. But certainly this is a losing issue, and the Left’s insistence otherwise speaks to its insufferable hubris.
