The International Cricket Council announced Tuesday that transgender women are to be barred from competing in women's international cricket.

A "new gender eligibility regulation" was pushed out by the ICC after it was approved by the governing body's board for the protection and integrity of women's sports, according to a report.

"Male-to-female participants who have undergone male puberty will not be eligible to compete in the international women's game," the ICC said.

New regulations are to apply "irrespective of any surgical or gender reassignment treatment" athletes may have undergone, the governing body added.

"The changes to the gender eligibility regulations resulted from an extensive consultation process and are founded in science, aligning with the core principles developed during the review," ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said.

"Inclusivity is incredibly important to us as a sport, but our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women's game and the safety of players."

Rules related to transgender athletes will be reexamined in roughly two years to measure against the "sport's evolving landscape," according to the ICC.
