A Wisconsin mother has sued her local school district for refusing to provide her with a copy of a document detailing a teacher's gender transition that was read out loud to students at several schools.

In a lawsuit filed in Wisconsin state court, Lea Buchman accused the Eau Claire Area School District of violating public records law when it refused to comply with her request seeking a prepared statement that was read to students at a number of district schools that shared details regarding the gender transition of an orchestra teacher.

HOW BAD WOULD A UPS STRIKE BE FOR THE ECONOMY?

According to the lawsuit, which was filed by the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, on June 5, orchestra students at Northstar Middle School were required to attend a session with orchestra teacher Jacob Puccio and Dang Yang, the school district's diversity, equity, and inclusion director.

The lawsuit says that Puccio and Yang informed the students that the orchestra teacher now identified as a woman and that they must address the teacher as "Ms. Puccio."

"Puccio then told the assembled students that Puccio had felt Puccio was a girl from an early age and experienced childhood trauma because Puccio’s parents and friends did not accept that Puccio was the opposite sex from that assigned at birth," the lawsuit says. "The discussion also included reference to a medical procedure Puccio was to undergo."

After the meeting, the lawsuit says, a script detailing Puccio's transition was read at a number of schools in the district, including at a high school attended by Buchman's child. The script was reportedly read without any notice to parents.

Since learning of the document, the lawsuit says that Buchman has repeatedly sought to obtain it through a public records request but that the school district has refused to provide it.

"All I am asking is for the school district to provide what was told to my children and their peers in the classroom," Buchman said in a statement. "As a parent, it’s my responsibility to help my kids understand all that life throws their way, and I do not understand why it has taken the school district so long to update parents.”

Cory Brewer, an associate counsel at the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, said the district's refusal to comply with Buchman's records request was "ridiculous."

“It’s ridiculous for a school district to refuse to produce a statement that was read out loud to dozens of minor students in several district classrooms," Brewer said. "What was told to these kids should be readily accessible to parents.”

In a statement to the Washington Examiner, a spokesperson for the Eau Claire Area School District said that the district had received several inquiries from parents regarding the June 5 incident and had launched an investigation to "determine if there were any missteps under school district policy."

"With the summer season upon us, the investigation has encountered some issues with witness/employee availability. Work on the investigation is ongoing," the district said.
