NextImg:Transgender model sues agency over alleged insufficient masculinity claim

A model who is a biological female identifying as male filed a discrimination suit against a New York City modeling agency on Tuesday, alleging the agency ended the model's career after labeling the model "insufficiently masculine."

Frances Coombe, a 30-year-old native Canadian, filed the suit against Muse Model Management in federal court and named the agency and its president, Conor Kennedy, as defendants, according to a report.

Coombe alleges that both parties violated civil rights that protect a person's gender identity, and the model is seeking at least $300,000 in lost income, plus additional damages, citing a hurt reputation and emotional distress.

"It is no surprise that models evolve their looks, and I had been moving towards more androgyny for quite some time," Coombe said.

Other models Coombe works with have also made the move to more androgynous looks, but they have not been met with the same pushback, Coombe alleges.

Coombe's conflict with Muse reached its peak when Coombe, who has featured for Marc Jacobs and Gucci, informed the agency of a wish no longer to model as a female and make a switch to strictly male work.

After the agency heard the request, Muse "refused" and "constructively terminated" Coombe's contract, the suit alleged.

Coombe, who now works under We Speak Model Management, also accused Kennedy of deriding in 2021 that there is no such thing as genderless work.

"In modeling life, you will be 'she' and 'her' until you arrive on set, nonbinary models are not sought after in the casting process. When you show up for a job, you can tell them your pronouns then," Coombe accused Kennedy of stating.

"We'll be sending you to women's wear jobs, and you have to separate your private life from your work life."

After this, Coombe would attempt to model men's swimwear, but Muse would "insist" Coombe wear a bikini, the suit alleges.

In 2022, the model took new photos to present as male to the agency and began taking testosterone — and saw a "rapid decline" in opportunities and income, leading to a resignation, Coombe alleges.

An attorney for Kennedy ripped Coombe's suit as "legally flawed," the report noted.

"Muse represented Frances Coombe for over 10 years as a model. It's surprising and disappointing that Frances has filed this lawsuit, after a decade of working together, that lacks merit and is legally flawed," Carlos Carvajal said. "We look forward to clearing Muse of any alleged wrongdoing."
