The CEO of TotalEnergies said Tuesday that the company is pausing the buildout of its offshore wind farm off the coast of New York due to President-elect Donald Trump’s promises to hinder the renewable energy industry.
“In offshore wind, I decided to put the project on pause, because all the offshore wind projects are in Democratic states … we’ll see better in four years,” TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne said at the Energy Intelligence Forum in London. “The advantage is that it’s only for four years.”
When completed, the project was expected to power more than 3 million homes.

The Biden administration has created incentives to bolster the renewable energy industry through the 2022 Democrat-passed Inflation Reduction Act, but Trump has vowed to slash those incentives.

Trump has specifically spoken out against offshore wind projects. During a rally in May, he said he would end wind projects by executive order on day one of his presidency.
“They destroy everything, they’re horrible, the most expensive energy there is,” Trump said. “They ruin the environment, they kill the birds, they kill the whales.”
