The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for some mid-Atlantic states this Memorial Day, including Washington, D.C., Maryland, and parts of Virginia and North Carolina.

Residents in the impacted areas could see wind gusts of up to 70 mph as well as hail the size of pingpong balls, according to CNN. The tornado watch is in effect until 11 p.m.

“Damaging winds are expected to be the most common risks, but large hail is also possible, along [with] the potential for a couple of tornadoes regionally,” the Storm Prediction Center said in a warning.

Storm activity in the Washington, D.C., area is expected to increase into the evening. A cold front moving into the area may act as the trigger to storms that could develop quickly near and west of the Interstate 95 corridor.

A severe thunderstorm watch was also issued for parts of New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey affecting more than 30 million people in the Northeast. The watch is in effect until 9:30 p.m. Monday.

This Sunday was the sixth day so far this year with 100 or more tornado warnings, which means 2024 could be on track to have the most in a single year. 2011 had the most with nine days.
