A top anti-abortion organization is calling out former President Donald Trump for what it's saying is a "morally indefensible position."

The Susan B. Anthony List once maintained a great relationship with Trump, even hosting him as a keynote speaker at its annual gala in 2018.

But now, SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said, “We will oppose any presidential candidate who refuses to embrace at a minimum a 15-week national standard to stop painful late-term abortions."

The statement, released on Thursday, comes in response to a recent comment on U.S. abortion policy from Trump's campaign.

“President Donald J. Trump believes that the Supreme Court, led by the three Justices which he supported, got it right when they ruled this is an issue that should be decided at the State level," the Trump campaign told the Washington Examiner.

"Republicans have been trying to get this done for 50 years, but were unable to do so. President Trump, who is considered the most pro-life President in history, got it done. He will continue these policies when re-elected to the White House. Like President Reagan before him, President Trump supports exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother," it continued.

The campaign did not provide further comment on the backlash from SBA List.

In SBA's release, Dannenfelser continued, stating that “President Trump’s assertion that the Supreme Court returned the issue of abortion solely to the states is a completely inaccurate reading of the Dobbs decision and is a morally indefensible position for a self-proclaimed pro-life presidential candidate to hold."

"Saying that the issue should only be decided at the states is an endorsement of abortion up until the moment of birth, even brutal late-term abortions in states like California, Illinois, New York and New Jersey. The only way to save these children is through federal protections, such as a 15-week federal minimum standard when the unborn child can feel excruciating pain," she continued.

Notably, Trump was the first sitting president to ever attend the March for Life, which he did in 2020. “They are coming after me because I am fighting for you and we are fighting for those that have no voice, and we will win because we know how to win,” he told the crowd at the time. “Together we are the voice for the voiceless.”

Abortion has emerged as an important issue in the 2024 Republican primary. While several expected candidates have reiterated anti-abortion beliefs, reports have indicated that the Trump campaign believes a federal abortion ban could be a losing issue.

Recently, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who has not announced a 2024 bid but is nonetheless polling in second place at 24%, signed a six-week ban on abortion in Florida.

Trump has been quick to attack DeSantis, who appears to be his chosen nemesis in the primary battle, but has remained mum on the ban.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who recently launched an exploratory committee for a possible 2024 bid, said that he would sign the most conservative legislation on abortion if he were commander in chief.

Trump's former vice president and potential 2024 candidate, Mike Pence, reiterated his staunch anti-abortion beliefs in a recent interview.

A spokesperson for Pence told the Washington Examiner on Thursday that “Mike Pence is pro-life and he doesn’t apologize for it. The Dobbs decision gave a second chance in the fight for Life, and he’s not going to rest or relent until the sanctity of life is restored to the center of American law in every state in the country.”
