Incoming border czar Tom Homan shared his determination to eliminate “sanctuary cities” from becoming “sanctuaries for criminals.”
President-elect Donald Trump tapped the former Immigration and Customs Enforcement director to be his border czar on Sunday. In an appearance on Fox and Friends on Monday, Homan explained his focus will be on stopping crime in sanctuary cities, even if Democratic governors don’t support his agenda.
“Well, a suggestion: If you are not going to help us, get the hell out of the way ’cause we’re gonna do it. So, if we can’t get assistance in New York City, we may have to double the agents we send in New York City. We are going to do the job,” Homan said. “Sanctuary cities are sanctuaries for criminals.”
Homan acknowledged that immigrants are “God-fearing family people” and expressed his commitment to protect them from criminals and the Salvadorian gang MS-13.
“Let us protect the immigrant community. Who is the victim of MS-13 crime? The immigrant community,” Homan said. “So, you know, if sanctuary cities don’t want to help us, get out of the way because we’re coming.”
The former ICE director began as a low-level agent who moved up the ranks to become the director. According to him, the Biden administration “pissed off” Homan, which began his public support of Trump while on the campaign trail. Homan said that when he was offered the position, he knew he would have to accept or appear “like a hypocrite” for not rising to the occasion to fix the border crisis.
President Joe Biden tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to be his border czar, for which she faced scrutiny. Since the pair took office in 2021, over 10 million immigrants have reportedly entered the country illegally, the most recorded in that amount of time of any administration.

“I’m going to look like a genius because when you follow a failure you can’t help but succeed, right?” Homan said.
A report from Blueprint found that nearly a quarter of voters ranked the border as their top issue of the Nov. 5 election. It was in the top three issues voters had overall in choosing Trump over Harris.
