Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) accused Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) of failing to take proper action to protect student protester Mahmoud Khalil, due to his being Palestinian.
Tlaib went off during a House Oversight Committee hearing, primarily directing her ire at President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. However, she also directed some fury at Democrats, taking aim at Hochul.

“Gov. Hochul, sometimes I feel like because [Khalil is] Palestinian, you didn’t speak up enough, and I say that as a Palestinian American serving here in Congress,” Tlaib said.
“We all need to always support due process for everyone, no matter if you disagree with them politically or not,” she added. “The judge said they might release him on Friday. You should use this opportunity, Gov. Hochul, to redeem yourself and welcome that decision.”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested Khalil in March, aiming to deport him on national security grounds. A federal judge in New Jersey ruled Wednesday that the Trump administration cannot deport him on that basis.
Hochul criticized Khalil’s arrest shortly after it took place in March. She portrayed his detention as an assault on the rule of law.

“Our federal immigration focus needs to be on dangerous criminals, and in this particular case, the facts are not clear,” Hochul told reporters.
“Here in New York, unlike the president, we actually respect rule of law, so I’m waiting to see what the judge says about this,” she added.
