With President Joe Biden off the ticket, Democrats decided to replace his fabricated personal history with that of Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN).
Walz has peddled a false history of himself to propel his political career, chiefly concerning his military service. For years, Walz lied, either intentionally or by refusing to correct the record, about where he served, the rank he retired with, and whether he saw combat. That included not correcting the record when he was introduced as having served in Afghanistan (he didn’t) or when Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi praised his service “on the battlefield” despite Walz’s only deployments being to Italy and Norway.
Walz directly contributed to this as well, using his military service to argue for taking guns away from law-abiding gun owners. “We can make sure those weapons of war that I carried in war are only carried in war,” Walz said in 2018, despite never carrying weapons “in war.”
Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign claims he misspoke, but given how often Walz has deliberately tried to portray himself as a veteran of combat, that is hard to believe.
Walz’s military service also bleeds into the other big lie in his background. Walz was arrested in 1995 for drunk driving, but when running for Congress in 2006, his campaign manager claimed he only failed a sobriety test because of his hearing loss from military service, that Walz wasn’t drunk, and that the judge reprimanded the arresting officer.

It turns out the only piece of that event that may be true is Walz’s hearing loss, and even that is irrelevant to the story. Walz failed a breath test and was well above the legal blood alcohol level limit. He had even acknowledged he was drunk in court records. The DUI charge was “dropped for a reason,” his campaign manager said, but that reason wasn’t that Walz wasn’t drunk. Walz pleaded down to reckless driving because he was pulled over after driving 96 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Walz tried to enhance his political background by falsely presenting himself as a combat veteran and downplaying driving 40 mph over the speed limit, drunk, while he was working as a teacher with a fabricated story about how he just couldn’t hear the officer. Just as with Biden and his record as a serial liar, Walz has proved he can’t be trusted to tell the truth about himself and his own life. There is no reason to expect he will tell the truth about anything else, especially when it comes to the policies he and Harris support.
