NextImg:Tim Scott contends voters are ’embracing’ Trump’s position to let states decide on abortion - Washington Examiner

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) argued Sunday that the topic of abortion limits ought to be left up to the states, echoing previous comments made by former President Donald Trump.

Scott was asked about his ability to potentially change Trump’s mind on a national abortion ban if he were to become his vice president, a position for which Trump is rumored to be considering Scott. In response, the South Carolina senator claimed that his fellow Democratic senators voted to allow abortion up until birth, describing this stance as “amoral.”

“However, the Supreme Court has already ruled that this is a state’s issue,” Scott said on Fox News Sunday. “President Trump and Speaker Johnson have both said that this will remain a state’s issue. It is consistent with the Supreme Court, and we must make sure that we allow the American people to see the absolute extreme position of insanity on the Left, and the state’s rights issue on the Right.”

Scott previously ran for president in the 2024 election cycle, during which he campaigned on the possibility of a 15-week abortion ban. The senator explained on Sunday that voters are rallying around Trump and embracing his position to allow each state to individually decide its abortion limits.

“That is a settled issue for our party, and frankly, it is one that takes that issue off the table for the Democrats who have the most extreme position on abortion,” Scott said.

Besides Scott, other candidates rumored to be on Trump’s short-list for vice president are Dr. Ben Carson, Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY).

The 2024 election cycle will see the first presidential election since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, with the Democratic Party making abortion rights a major focus ahead of Election Day. Over the last week, the House Majority PAC rolled out a $100 million campaign to give the Democratic Party a majority in the House of Representatives again by focusing on abortion.

Trump stated in April that he believes abortion limits ought to be left up to the states, marking a shift from most Republicans who have campaigned on abortion limits since Roe v. Wade was overturned. A campaigning focus on abortion has recently borne little fruit for the Republican Party, with the 2023 elections and the 2022 midterm elections both giving disappointing results.
