“America’s worst mayor” Tiffany Henyard lost her nomination bid to retain her position as Thornton Township supervisor on Tuesday night.

The Democratic Party Caucus voted against Henyard’s nomination because she did not have a full slate of leaders, including highway director, clerk, assessor, and four trustees, on her ticket. She did not have a certified accessor, so the caucus moved not to grant her the nomination.

This was the first time in 30 years that a caucus was used in Thornton Township to determine who would be on the ballot.

People cheered following the vote to deny Henyard access to the April ballot. She has served in the position of township supervisor since 2022, and her tenure has caused many problems, as she has been accused of abusing the township’s funds.

She serves as the mayor of Dolton, and an audit by former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot reviewed that under Henyard’s leadership, the village’s credit cards paid for nine domestic trips, $43,000 spent on Amazon in one day, $8,000 of purchases at Wayfair, and $2,000 spent at Best Buy.

In lieu of Henyard, the caucus selected Illinois state Sen. Napoleon Harris to be the Democratic nominee.

“So, to hear the people, tonight — you heard them express how wonderful it was to finally, finally get rid of her,” Burt Odelson, Harris’s attorney, told ABC7.

Now, Henyard’s only hope in retaining her position is to run as a write-in candidate.

Henyard had bused in senior citizens to attend the caucus, but they had arrived late. The room only fit 600 people, and many of her supporters weren’t able to get in.

“I will be suing everyone tomorrow,” Henyard said. “This is illegal. Illegal.”

Members of the caucus sang the 1960s pop song “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” as she walked out of the room.
