A Massachusetts theater has issued an apology after hosting a screening of the movie Jaws, which was preceded by a segment featuring Richard Dreyfuss, who reportedly criticized actress/director Barbra Streisand and gender transitions for children.

Dreyfuss, who played Matt Hooper in the iconic 1975 thriller, walked onto the stage wearing a dress over his clothes while shaking his hips to Taylor Swift’s Love Story. During his segment, he also discussed the 1987 film Nuts, which he co-starred with Streisand. Dreyfuss described her as a “genius” but added that women “are so passive, that’s why the movie sucked,” according to social media posts recounting the event.

The actor also reportedly criticized the idea of gender transition practices for children, stating that “you shouldn’t be listening to some 10-year-old who says they want to be a boy instead of a girl.”

The full transcript of the event has not been released by the theater. However, a video of the event released online appeared to show audiences cheering once Dreyfuss finished his session answering questions.

“We regret that an event that was meant to be a conversation to celebrate an iconic movie instead became a platform for political views,” The Cabot theater’s apology read. “We take full responsibility for the oversight in not anticipating the direction of the conversation and for the discomfort it caused to many patrons.”

The actor’s son, Ben Dreyfuss, has come to his father’s defense online, writing on X that while the two disagree on a number of topics, people are free to disagree because “it’s a free country.” He has also denied claims by other outlets that he called his father’s comments “disgusting” or “outrageous,” noting that “I wasn’t there and didn’t see it!”

The Washington Examiner has contacted The Cabot for comment.
