Hosts of The View are torn over President Joe Biden‘s former chief of staff, Ron Klain’s suggestion to focus more on high grocery prices.
Thursday’s episode hearkened to leaked audio of Klain saying, “I think the president is out there too much talking about bridges,” while Americans “go to the grocery store and, you know, eggs and milk are expensive.” Some hosts agreed with Klain.
“Even if you support Biden, no one should be immune from criticism,” Alyssa Farrah Griffin said, paraphrasing talk show host John Stewart. “I want Trump to lose. I’m not a Biden supporter, but what I hear when I talk to undecideds, is the grocery bills.”
“I see what you’re saying,” Sara Haines said. “Even campaigning on things like that helps.”
Still others disagreed and argued that Biden’s focus is on the right issues. They pointed to his response to the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse off the coast of Maryland. The president has committed to pay for its reconstruction.
“Here’s the problem: He does — he goes and he takes care of what he’s supposed to be taking care of, which is the bridge,” Whoopi Goldberg said of Biden. “You know, people are bing if he does stuff, they b if he doesn’t do stuff. Listen, he’s doing what he’s supposed to be doing. He’s doing what he’s supposed to be doing. I’m pissed off.”
Goldberg went on to say she was mad at grocery stores for raising prices.
“It’s terrible because, you know, he’s damned if he does or damned if he doesn’t. So if he doesn’t respond immediately to a tragedy — seven people decided on that bridge — It’s an important port in Baltimore then they’re furious. They say he’s missing, he’s hiding in a basement,” Sunny Hostin said. “If he responds to it, as he should as the commander in chief, you know, he should be looking at something else.”

The average price at the grocery store has increased 25% in the last five years. This comes as the producer price index rose 0.6 percentage points to 2.1% in March. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that inflation rose to 3.5% for the year ending in March.
Klain had served as Biden’s chief through February of last year.
