The View host Sara Haines has called for the Republican National Committee to end its requirement to pledge support to the party's 2024 nominee to debate onstage, as current polls indicate the nominee could be former President Donald Trump.
Haines's request comes after Trump announced he received a letter notifying that he is "a TARGET" of special counsel Jack Smith's grand jury investigation. The View host called for the RNC to end the pledge requirement "immediately."

"If they have to loyalty pledge, at least have a caveat — 'not Trump,'" Haines said. "You can't — putting someone up there that has all this on their plate is ridiculous."

The RNC revealed last month it will not drop its debate requirement to support the party’s eventual presidential nominee. It comes as some Republican candidates have said they will refuse to back Trump, who has emerged as the early front-runner.
Fellow View host Alyssa Farah Griffin has called for other Republicans running in the 2024 presidential Republican primary race to "run to win right now," as any Republican waiting for the trials that Trump faces to be over may be waiting until after the 2024 presidential election happens. Griffin added she is concerned that Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) is running both as a presidential candidate and aiming to become Trump's vice presidential pick and said he "needs to stand on his own two feet."
Trump's statement on the letter he received from Smith follows a similar pattern of him dangling his arrest to the public before the government brings forth charges, as he similarly did ahead of his indictment in New York on 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to an alleged cover-up scheme to hide an affair with porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of his 2016 campaign run. Trump has pleaded not guilty in this case.

Former Texas Rep. Will Hurd, who is running for president in 2024, has stated he will not agree to the RNC's requirement to endorse the 2024 nominee in order to debate other candidates, stating he is "not in the business of lying to the American people in order to get a microphone."
We pledge allegiance to the United States, not political leaders. I'm working to fulfill the debate requirements but I'm not going to lie to the American people or my party for the sake of a microphone. https://t.co/UoYuhkfAph https://t.co/bLvlqK1FtD
