The View's Sunny Hostin attributed Vice President Kamala Harris's relative unpopularity to "the history, of course, of misogyny" and racism in the United States.

On Tuesday's episode, the hosts discussed a new report that the reelection campaign for President Joe Biden is looking to boost Harris's image. According to Hostin, her low approval rating is partially due to the fact that she is a black woman.

BIDEN NEEDS TO SHELVE TAX INCREASES AND FOCUS ON SPENDING

"We’re in the United States of America. And black women, and this is not just me saying it — I mean, there have been studies. Black women are considered less articulate. They are considered uglier. They are considered all of these things by this country." she explained. "And it’s because of the history, of course, of misogyny and sexism."

Alyssa Farah Griffin said that she sees the vice president's role as twofold: "Do no harm" and maintain "a higher approval rating than your principal."

Harris maintains an approval rating of 37.8% and a disapproval rating of 51.3%, according to FiveThirtyEight. Biden, on the other hand, has a higher approval rating, boasting 41.5%. However, the president also has a higher disapproval rating, with 54.8%.

"She hasn't broken through on major policy accomplishments," Griffin said of Harris. "And she will, fairly or unfairly, be the most scrutinized vice president in history because she’s running with the oldest president running for president."

"And she’s also a black woman," Hostin interjected.

Griffin pushed back, saying, "I think you have to be fairly critique the vice president of the United States without just saying it is the color of her skin or she’s a woman."

"But it is part of it," Hostin said.

The host added, "I understand why they are boosting her at this point. They want to boost her because no Democratic nominee can win the general election without the black vote. I mean, that is just a fact."

She further alleged that "she probably, in many respects, won that election for him. And so, black voters saved his campaign in 2020. They could also be why he loses it in 2024."

When Hostin questioned former Vice President Mike Pence's record, Griffin readily listed off three of his accomplishments: the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement, Operation Warp Speed, and Republican tax reforms.

"Those are things that he accomplished. I struggle with the vice president. Why is she not front and center on Dobbs?" she asked.

Biden's campaign is reportedly making a large effort to bolster Harris, particularly because, due to Biden's advanced age, the public needs to be convinced that she will be qualified to step in as president if need be.

The campaign is doing this by symbolically involving her and positioning her prominently at pivotal meetings, such as the May 16 debt ceiling discussion in the Oval Office. They are also beefing up her speaking schedule and targeting critical issues such as abortion and infrastructure.
