Donald Trump's third bid to run the free world has been, to borrow a phrase, rather low energy. Like most of his post-2020 activities, Trump's "campaign" has been limited to executing vendettas on Truth Social and publishing 60-second clips of himself sharing policy proposals and favorable articles about his run. Trump has only held two rallies, instead preferring to hold court in the luxurious comfort of Mar-A-Lago.
However, the Donald Trump that his fans have been waiting for finally emerged from the ashes of Joe Biden's failure. After the Biden administration, including his EPA and Transportation Department, ignored the disastrous derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine, Ohio, the former president descended from his opulent hibernation to join a people in peril.
"They were doing nothing for you," Trump said of the Biden administration after distributing donations of bottles of water, cleaning supplies, and McDonald's meals for residents and first responders. “They were intending to do nothing for you."
There are three reasons this is all political gold.
For starters, what Trump is saying is true. The Biden administration, which is backing Norfolk Southern in a Supreme Court case about a separate worker's health claim, relied on Ohio's EPA to claim the East Palestine water was safe to drink ... based on testing by Norfolk Southern.
Furthermore, Trump's appearance is probably what it took to scare Biden into sending Transportation Department and 2024 understudy Pete Buttigieg to the wreck.
But finally, Trump took a break from his demand that you back his poppycock claims about the 2020 election and other personal affronts and instead became the strongman who does the work to stand for you.

What would Ron DeSantis do other than tick off a fellow popular Republican governor who could be a crucial ally? What would Nikki Haley do? Stand there?
Only Trump, a literal billionaire with the ability to buy crucial aid out of pocket, could go to East Palestine without it seeming like a cheap political stunt or petty virtue signal. If Trump wants to win, he should continue to make this campaign a little more about what Don can do for the people and not about what Ron is doing in Florida.
