NBC‘s Ronna McDaniel debacle has the Republican National Committee thinking about cutting off the network entirely. The only question is what took so long?
The RNC is considering restricting NBC’s access to the Republican National Convention after the network hired McDaniel and then immediately fired her following a tantrum from NBC’s on-air “talent.” The message was clear: NBC can litter its airwaves with former Democratic operatives, including Chuck Todd, who kicked off the tantrum, and Jen Psaki, whom NBC hired while she was still serving as a mouthpiece for the Biden White House, but a milquetoast Republican is where the network draws the line, unless that milquetoast Republican becomes a Democrat, as Nicolle Wallace did.
While it is great that Republicans are just maybe realizing that NBC is a hostile network, it is laughable that it took this long and even more laughable that it took the mistreatment of a mediocre GOP operative such as McDaniel to even consider it. This is the same NBC that, as mentioned earlier, is made up of former Democratic operatives, former GOP operatives who now support Democrats, and former “deep state” intelligence operatives who support Democrats. NBC’s response to firing McDaniel was that the network must be “aligned” in its message which, as my colleague Jeremiah Poff notes, just means Republicans must be frozen out.
The network’s treatment of Republicans prior to this shows you everything you need to know. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) actually froze out NBC after anchor Andrea Mitchell lied about Florida’s African American history standards in a softball interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. In 2015, CNBC was given a GOP primary debate, in which John Harwood and other moderators spent their time trashing all of the candidates in the worst primary debate in recent memory. The RNC even temporarily suspended NBC from hosting debates over that disaster.

Not that it mattered, though — McDaniel ended up giving the network the first non-Fox News debate of the 2024 cycle anyway.
If this is the inciting incident to finally get Republicans to treat NBC like the biased, pro-Democratic network it is, then so be it. But it shouldn’t have taken this long. NBC has made its standing clear with the past debate debacles, inaccurate or purposely misleading reports that always cut against the GOP, and its history of hiring Democrats and Republicans-turned-Democrats. All that is left is whether the RNC will forgive and forget in a few months, just like it has every time this problem has come up in the past.
