NextImg:The Democratic Party depends on conformity — voluntary or not - Washington Examiner

The Democratic Party has made two serious miscalculations in the past decade that have jeopardized its power. They weren’t political miscalculations so much as they were moral ones, both driven by the party’s arrogance.

The first was in 2016 when Democrats assumed their traditional voting blocs would back Hillary Clinton because they had been told to. The second was assuming that President Joe Biden would abandon his reelection bid because he was told to.

Biden has made it clear over the past week that he simply does not care how many Democrats want him to step aside from the top of the 2024 ticket. It’s not going to happen.

This has come as quite a shock to the liberal media complex, Hollywood A-Listers, and congressional Democrats who are used to their party working as a well-oiled machine. It’s hard to blame them: Top-down governance from the Democratic elite has worked remarkably well for the party over the past several years.

It’s the reason Biden is in the White House at all. After determining that Biden had the best chance at winning a general election and beating then-President Donald Trump in 2020, the powers that be pressured other leading primary candidates, including former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), both of whom were polling ahead of Biden at the time, to drop out and endorse him.

And Biden himself has, until this point, played his role perfectly. As soon as he entered the Oval Office, he handed over the keys to his administration to a bunch of radicals who decided to implement the most left-wing agenda the country has ever seen. Even when the consequences of this agenda became apparent — record high inflation, a wide-open and crime-ridden southern border, and growing foreign conflict — Joe “the moderate” Biden went along with it.

That is until they tried to take the White House from him.

Now Biden is sending them careening toward another humiliating loss, and against the exact same person who benefited from their 2016 miscalculation: Trump.

All of this points to a deeper problem with the Democratic Party. Its success entirely depends on conformity — voluntary or not. Dissent and debate are fine so long as everyone ultimately follows orders. Challenge those orders and you’ll get the Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) treatment. The only Democrat last year willing to publicly admit Biden was unfit to serve another four years, Phillips was forced out of Democratic House leadership for trying to primary Biden. Boy, how they now must wish he had succeeded.

The Democratic Party’s need to exert control is obvious, not just in the way it treats its members and voters but in its policies, too. During the pandemic, for example, the Biden administration sought to silence debate on Democrats’ COVID-19 governance by encouraging Big Tech companies to censor people online.

Or consider the Biden administration’s “green” agenda. Though officials claim the policies are only meant to incentivize companies and consumers to make a “green” transition, that’s just not true. A closer look at the administration’s regulations shows they are deliberately trying to control everything from what cars people can drive to what household appliances they can use to how new buildings are constructed.

This is not a party that seeks the well-being of its constituents — or the country’s, for that matter. The Democratic Party has only one goal in mind: forcing its will onto anyone and everyone by any means necessary.

Perhaps we should be thankful to Biden and the Democrats’ own hubris for getting in their way.
