In case you need a refresher, the people cheering on terrorists and burning American flags are always the bad guys. That includes “pro-Palestinian” protesters.

“Pro-Palestinian” protesters tore down and burned American flags at Union Station in Washington, D.C., raising Palestinian flags to replace them. They vandalized a statue of Christopher Columbus and a replica of the Liberty Bell with graffiti that included messages such as “Hamas is coming” and “Long Live the Intifada.” Oh, and yes, “Abolish the USA.”

This is why the watered-down label of “pro-Palestinian” is insufficient. Being “pro-Palestinian” means being antisemitic, which these protesters are. It means being terrorist sympathizers, which these protesters are. It means being anti-American, which, needless to say, the protesters burning American flags are. In many cases, it also means being OK with crime, whether that is setting up illegal encampments on college campuses or vandalizing statues and burning American flags that are not your own.

And yet, these protesters and the people who support them are key players in the Democratic Party’s activist base. Vice President Kamala Harris, the new leader of the Democratic Party, couldn’t even muster a condemnation of these protesters until the day after all of this happened. Harris ditched Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before Congress to pander to these activists in the first place, making it clear that she, like they, will be tougher on Israel than on the Hamas terrorists who are responsible for the bloodshed in the region.

That is why the Biden administration wasted hundreds of millions of dollars on a Gaza pier to send aid to Gaza despite having good reason to suspect that Hamas would steal that aid. That is why both President Joe Biden and Harris have threatened consequences for Israel, even as they remain committed to funneling aid to Gaza that everyone knows ends up in Hamas’s hands. Biden, Harris, and much of the Democratic Party want a “ceasefire” that would leave Hamas in power and let the threat of terrorism continue to loom over Israel.

These protesters, with their flag-burning, antisemitism, and terrorist sympathies, are part of the Democratic base, which Democrats admit through their policies even as they try and distance themselves from the protests themselves. Contrast that with people such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill fraternity members who went to one of these protests to protect the American flag and were then given a platform at the Republican National Convention. Or with the convention attendees who chanted to bring American hostages held by Hamas home, a display that is hard to imagine seeing at the Democratic National Convention.

Polls consistently show far higher levels of patriotism among conservatives than among liberals, and a not-inconsiderable subset of the Left actually detests this land of freedom.

The people who support freeing hostages and the American flag are the ones worth counting among your base. The ones who burn the American flag and proudly wave the flag of a terrorist “state” are not, but those are the ones Democrats would rather court.
