NextImg:Texas power grid operator issues third energy conservation notice for the summer

Texas's grid operator called on consumers to limit their power use on Sunday, the second request in three days, as the state continues to be broiled in a heat wave.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas said the request was brought on by "extreme temperatures, continued high demand, and unexpected loss of thermal generation." The grid operator requested that Texans reduce their usage between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Central time. However, ERCOT clarified that it was not experiencing emergency conditions when the notice was sent.

In a press statement, the grid operator stated that ERCOT reached a new all-time weekend peak demand record of 84,805 megawatts, adding to the 10 new all-time peak demand records that were established this summer.

The current heat wave has cranked up the demand for electricity as Texans increase their air-conditioning use. The National Weather Service set an excessive heat warning on Sunday for parts of Texas, along with portions of the Midwest and South. Highs of 109 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit in Dallas on Saturday and Sunday would break the current record of 107 degrees for both days, both set in 2011.
