Attorney General Ken Paxton's (R-TX) state Senate impeachment trial is scheduled to begin on the morning of Sept. 5, with his attendance mandatory, the Texas Senate announced Wednesday night.

The state's upper chamber passed a resolution in a 28-0 vote that requires Paxton's in-person attendance at the trial in order to answer to the impeachment charges brought by the state's lower chamber, according to the Texas Tribune. If convicted, Paxton will be permanently removed from office.

Paxton is being impeached over accusations of bribery, obstruction of justice, and misappropriation of public resources. Most of the allegations are centered on whistleblower testimony of misconduct in an investigation into a friend and political donor of Paxton's.

Seven whistleblowers came forward to the FBI in 2020, where they alleged wrongdoing on the part of Paxton in an investigation into Nate Paul, a Houston real estate investor under federal investigation for fraud.

The state House voted to impeach the conservative Texas attorney general in a 121-23 vote in May, despite being a Republican-dominated chamber. The state Senate is also controlled by Republicans, who hold 19 seats, while Democrats hold nine. Former Texas Secretary of State John Scott has been appointed the interim attorney general.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R-TX) has instructed senators, their staff, and others involved in the court side of the impeachment to refrain from discussing the case with others, including Paxton, his lawyers, and lawyers for the state House impeachment managers.
