Sen. Jon Tester's (D-MT) reelection campaign announced on Thursday that he raised $5 million in the second quarter of 2023, breaking his record for non-election year fundraising.
This comes after Tester gained a new Republican challenger in former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy. The veteran is supported by National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines (R-MT) and endorsed by Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT).

According to NBC News, Tester's campaign account had $10 million in it at the quarter's close. The campaign noted that the sum raised between April and June made it his best second-quarter total for a non-election year.

The Cook Political Report rated Tester's Senate seat as "lean Democratic" going into 2024.
Tester is relatively well-liked among Montanans. He has an approval rating of 42% among Montana voters who disapprove of President Joe Biden. This is significantly better than Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Bob Casey (D-PA), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), none of whom were able to break 34% in the same category.
