NextImg:Tenney fights illegal immigrants granted driver's licenses with new legislation

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) introduced a bill that would prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining a driver’s license in the United States.

The Red Light Act was introduced earlier this week to combat Tenney’s home state’s Green Light Law that was established in 2019. In New York, anyone over the age of 16, no matter their status, can receive a license, resulting in over 50,000 illegal immigrants receiving a New York state driver’s license.

“New York is one of the worst. We had almost 99 people I think, or 100 people, on the terror watch list just let loose. That’s the ones we know of. In our states they get driver’s licenses, gosh knows how. Who knows how they prove they are eligible?” Tenney said. “They are driving on the streets. They’re able to travel across state lines. They’re a danger to our communities. These are things that are just common sense, we need to stop these things.”

This comes as two major terrorist attacks were perpetrated by cars. A Tesla Cybertruck exploded in Las Vegas, and a truck rammed through a crowd in New Orleans. Both were committed by American citizens but have raised alarm bells on the state of illegal immigrants in the country with similar intentions.

The Green Light Law, while providing driver’s licenses to immgrants, also restricts law enforcement from accessing Department of Motor Vehicle records. According to Tenney, this leads to the DMV “preventing the enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws.”

An estimated 10 million immigrants illegally entered the U.S. since President Joe Biden took office. New York has hosted the bulk of these immigrants because of the state’s sanctuary status.
