AUSTIN, Texas — Ten immigrants who attempted to enter the United States from Mexico illegally over the weekend died as a result of the extreme heat after crossing the border, according to a federal law enforcement official.
"Over the weekend, extreme temperatures contributed to 45 individuals being rescued and 10 individuals who died due to the dangerous heat and conditions," said Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens in a tweet. "Make no doubt about it, summer is here, and the hottest days are yet upon us. Don't put your life in the hands of a smuggler."

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which oversees the Border Patrol, did not respond to a request for comment about where the deaths occurred and if the 10 were found dead or died after being rescued.

The number of dead immigrants recovered at the U.S.-Mexico border spiked during President Joe Biden’s first full year in office to the highest number on record, according to data acquired through a Freedom of Information Act request by the Washington Examiner last summer.
A record-high 880 people who illegally entered the United States were found dead in fiscal 2022, which ended in September. The Washington Examiner obtained the Border Patrol data Monday through a FOIA request filed in July 2022.

The 880 deaths were far higher than the 247 to 329 dead immigrants found each year between 2014 and 2020. Landowners, as well as police from the local, state, tribal, and federal levels, made the discoveries and reported the numbers to the federal government.
The new revelation underscores the human toll of the Biden administration's border crisis — with more people apprehended crossing into the U.S. illegally since March 2021 than any other time in the Border Patrol's century-long existence.
