A New York City teenager died Monday after he slammed into a metal beam while illegally subway surfing.

The incident occurred around 6:55 p.m. when the 15-year-old, whose name has not been released, was riding on top of a train while it crossed the Williamsburg Bridge, according to a report.

He slammed his head into a metal support beam, fell from the train, and was run over by the cars, authorities said.

At least one subway passenger said they had witnessed someone climb on top of the train as it pulled away from the Marcy Avenue station, the report noted.

"We cannot stress enough how dangerous it is to ride on the outside of trains," NYC Transit President Richard Davey said.

"Our hearts go out to loved ones at yet another tragic time. We implore other families to speak with their children on the real dangers of what can seem like a thrill but is too often deadly."

The 15-year-old had been surfing the J train, the same one that another teenager fell from and died after contacting the electrified third rail in December, according to the report.

There were over 450 reports of subway surfing last year, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

It is an "unfortunate trending issue," according to the New York City Police Department.

"Riding on the outside of a subway car is not only illegal but incredibly dangerous," police said in a statement.

"Each year we see riders, many of them teens, killed or seriously injured engaging in so-called subway surfing. We enforce rules prohibiting moving between the train cars in order to combat this dangerous behavior."
