Rep. Colin Allred's (D-TX) campaign to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) raised $6.2 million in the second quarter of 2023.

The Texas Democrat announced his campaign for Senate in early May and subsequently announced that he raked in more than $2 million in the first 36 hours.

Allred will be reporting $8.6 million in total for the quarter after transferring $2.4 million over from his House campaign account, according to the Texas Tribune.

FILE - Rep Colin Allred, D-Texas, speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington on Wednesday, June 24, 2020.

“Since day one this campaign has been about bringing people together to beat Ted Cruz and give this state the leadership it deserves,” campaign manager Paige Hutchinson said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “We are amazed at the outpouring of support, and more confident than ever that we will have the resources to win next November and send Ted Cruz packing.”

The Washington Examiner reached out to Cruz's campaign for second-quarter fundraising figures.

National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Philip Letsou told the Washington Examiner in a statement, “Democrats in California and New York have lit hundreds of millions of dollars on fire trying to buy a Texas Senate seat for a decade and have nothing to show for it. Colin Allred’s support for open borders and eliminating the Second Amendment will ensure he goes down in flames just like Beto O’Rourke.”

A May University of Texas at Tyler poll showed Cruz beating Allred with 42%, while his Democratic challenger received 37%.

Cruz's seat is rated likely Republican by the Cook Political Report, despite the bid from Allred.

Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke notably hauled in staggering amounts of contributions during his 2018 challenge to the senator. In all, O'Rourke reportedly raised more than $80 million to take on Cruz. And he spent almost all of it.

However, he ultimately lost to the incumbent Cruz by more than 200,000 votes, 50.9% to 48.3%.

Cruz is currently serving his second term in the Senate after initially being elected in 2012 and reelected in 2018.
