Teachers unions across the United States are joining calls from far-left groups for a ceasefire in Gaza, as Israel launched a military response following a series of terrorist attacks by Hamas.

Calls for a ceasefire, primarily from the far Left, have grown since Israel began its military response to the attacks. Several pro-Palestinian groups have accused Israel of genocide while praising Hamas.

On Monday, the Seattle Education Association approved a resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in the region so that peace can be negotiated and a resumption of basic amenities such as electricity to the city, as well as expanded humanitarian aid. The group also called for Hamas to release Israeli hostages.

"You can either say something or you can say nothing when there's a crisis in our world," said Sam Friedman, a member of the union, according to KOMO.

The Seattle teachers union is one of several that have signed on to statements calling for a ceasefire. The American Federation of Teachers in Oregon, the Chicago Teachers Union, and the Massachusetts Teachers Association have all signed on to a pro-ceasefire statement organized by the United Electrical Workers and the northwest chapter of the United Food and Commercial Workers.

The open letter calls on President Joe Biden and Congress to "push for an immediate ceasefire and end to the siege of Gaza" and includes a condemnation of "any hate crimes against Muslims, Jews, or anyone else."

"The road to justice cannot be paved by bombs and war. The road to peace cannot be found through warfare," the letter says. "We commit ourselves to work in solidarity with the Palestinian and Israeli peoples to achieve peace and justice."

Meanwhile, the national organization of the American Federation of Teachers has stopped short of calling for a ceasefire but has called for a "humanitarian pause."

"We acknowledge that Hamas may very well not abide by any type of cessation of warfare, but within the framework of humanitarian concern, we urge Israel and the United States to do whatever is achievable to save and protect innocent civilians, especially Palestinian children caught in the crossfire," the group said in a Nov. 4 statement.
