NextImg:Taylor Swift credited with bump in registered voters

Musician Taylor Swift issued a call to her Instagram followers to register to vote, which resulted in a 23% increase from last year.

Swift posted to her Instagram story, a post that only lasts 24 hours before it disappears, on National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday. In her post, she linked to Vote.org, which has a goal to register some 8 million more voters before the 2024 election.

"I've been so lucky to see so many of you guys at my US shows recently," Swift's post read. "I've heard you raise your voices, and I know how powerful they are. Make sure you're ready to use them in our elections this year!"

"Our site was averaging 13,000 users every 30 minutes — a number that Taylor Swift would be proud of," Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org, said in a statement. Swift claims the number 13 is significant; her birthday is Dec. 13, and her very first album went gold after 13 weeks.

In total, 35,252 registered on the site Tuesday, in addition to over 150,000 visiting the site. Notably, 18-year-old first-time voters registered by an increase of 115% from last year.

"Another Pennsylvanian getting people registered to vote this week," Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, along with a link about Swift's post.

The pop star, who boasts over 272 million Instagram followers, is currently on an international tour. Ticket sales for the tour in North America reached roughly $2.2 billion, according to an August report from research firm QuestionPro obtained by CNN.

Swift has shown her influence previously by announcing a film screening of her Eras Tour performance, which resulted in AMC Theatres reporting a 7% increase in shares the same day.
