NextImg:Tax season begins: How to file returns and when to expect IRS refund - Washington Examiner

People in the United States looking to file their taxes can start sending their tax returns to the IRS on Monday.

While tax season can be stressful, the prospect of receiving money back from the IRS can make the hassle of filing a return feel worth it.

A CreditKarma survey last week showed that 37% of taxpayers depend on their refund to make ends meet, including half of millennials.

Here’s how you should expect to navigate tax season and receive your refund.

Where can I file my taxes?

The IRS is offering a new program, Direct File, to file taxes directly with the agency for taxpayers in 25 states, including Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania. The program is free and designed to be simple to use.

Taxpayers can also use the agency’s Free File service with guided tax software if their adjusted gross income is under $84,000 or with fillable forms without specific guidance if they make over that amount.

The IRS also recommends tax services like FreeTaxUSA, TaxSlayer, and TaxAct. Companies such as H&R Block and TurboTax are popular among taxpayers as well.

When should I expect my tax refund?

Taxpayers should expect to wait up to 21 days if they file electronically and their return is complete and accurate. The wait time could be less than that if taxpayers add their direct deposit.

If a taxpayer opts for a paper return, a refund will be issued six to eight weeks after the agency receives the filing.

Errors, amended returns, or other corrections will delay the process of a tax refund.

People who decide to amend their tax return won’t receive their refund for up to five months. The IRS takes 3 weeks for the return to show in their system and can take up to 16 weeks to process.

Generally, most taxpayers who file their taxes Monday will get their refunds before any other later filers.

How do I keep track of my refund?

People who file their tax refund electronically will be able to check its status after around 24 hours.

To check your refund status, you will need your Social Security number, the tax year you are filing, your filing status, and the exact refund amount.

The IRS says the information is “updated once a day, overnight.” Once a refund is marked as sent, “It may take 5 days for it to show in your bank account or several weeks for your check to arrive in the mail.”

Once the status is marked “Refund Sent,” it can take up to 5 days to show in your bank account or several weeks for a check to arrive in the mail. A mark of “Return Received” means the agency has received your return and is processing it, while a mark of “Refund Approved” means the agency has approved your refund and will issue it on the date shown.

The IRS recommends not to call them about your refund unless the tracker says to do so. Corrections or additional reviews will delay your refund.
