Tax season ends in roughly a month, and the IRS is warning taxpayers of another scam to be wary of.

The IRS's warning concerns scammers trying to sell or offer help setting up an IRS online account. The accounts are made through the IRS's website and can be set up with no outside help. Anyone offering to help set up an account is likely someone trying to steal a taxpayer's identity, the IRS warned Wednesday.

“Scammers are coming up with new ways all the time to try to steal information from taxpayers,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “An Online Account at IRS.gov can help taxpayers view important details about their tax situation. But scammers are trying to convince people they need help setting up an account. In reality, no help is needed. This is just a scam to obtain valuable and sensitive tax information that scammers will use to try stealing a refund."

Scammers using this tactic try to appear as "helpful" third parties who offer to help create a taxpayer's IRS online account at IRS.gov. These people will often ask for the taxpayer's personal information, such as their address, Social Security number, or individual taxpayer identification number, which can be sold online.

The warning from the IRS is part of a "Dirty Dozen" series the IRS is conducting this month. The series is meant to inform taxpayers of various scams. Earlier this week, the IRS warned about phishing emails and text messages as well as Employee Retention Credits promotions.

The deadline to file taxes for most taxpayers is scheduled for April 18, but some disaster-stricken states have their deadline set for later in the year.
