Surplus tax refunds are set to be distributed to eligible residents in Georgia beginning this month.

Those who have filed their 2021 and 2022 tax returns, have a tax liability for the 2021 tax year, and are a resident, part-time resident, or nonresident of Georgia may be eligible for the surplus refund, per the Georgia Department of Revenue.

Joint filers who qualify for the surplus refund may receive as much as $500, while heads of households who are eligible can receive up to $350, and individual filers can receive as much as $250.

Taxpayers in the Peach State can see if they qualify for the surplus refund by checking the state's website. The online tool requires an individual's Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number, along with their federal adjusted gross income for the 2022 tax year.

State officials say the refund will be delivered in the same manner a taxpayer's regular refund is sent to them, via mail or direct deposit, with payments going directly to taxpayers rather than tax preparers.

The surplus refund payments are authorized by HB 162, which was signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) on March 14.

Other states are also offering tax rebates for residents. Montana is set to give eligible taxpayers a rebate worth up to $2,500 in the second half of 2023.
